Freud thought that the person suffering from schizophrenia withdrew from the world and attached their personality to more inner things. So the word he has for this was object-cathexis, so you would detach from your friends, from those around you, from things in the world that you’re interested in and focus on your own ego. Freud thought things like delusions and hallucinations were an attempt by the mind, the schizophrenic mind to once again reach out into the world after the withdrawal had happened. So it was a dysfunctional way of reaching back out into the world, but nevertheless an attempt to once again engage with the objects of the world once there had been that detachment; so very fascinating.
